I’m surprised at the number of firms full of “knowledge workers” that still have not adapted a minimum of two screens for their workforce. I think it is the single biggest thing that you can do to boost productivity. The original research looks like it came out of Microsoft Research in 2003, and the best blog post that I could find came from Patrick Dubroy. For those in doubt have a read, or visit IT Partners and look at our setup.
Here is something that could be useful for those of you using an iPad. You can download DisplayLink drivers and use your iPad as an additional screen.
Last week I presented a briefing to PWC on Cloud Computing. A focus of that briefing and the Q & A session was the state of the internet, Crown Fibre rollout and the constraints on international bandwidth. For a good pictorial demonstration of why we need Pacific Fibre to succeed have a look at this.
Another good way to visualise how connected the world has become use the Akamai Real-time Web Monitor and associated visualisation tools.
I was wrong. I thought that email footers were important, had precedent and were useful, only to find out they are a complete waste of time. In my defence, my thinking around email footers had changed over the years, but now an interesting article from the Economist: spare us the email yada-yada. My thinking is that it is far more important that you give important details on how to get hold of you, alternate contacts and other such details, than mindless legalese. Enough said.
I was asked yesterday what we do out in the community, and had to think about all the projects and organisations that we do help, so here is the list: Lifeline, Habitat for Humanity, Southwell School, The Hub, ShelterBox and Eastern Bays Hospice Trust.
Sometimes all that is required is our time, and I am incredibly grateful to all the team at IT Partners for helping out, as often it is additional work they take on, on top of a large workload. We are also really appreciative of the support we get from HP and Microsoft when it comes to charitable pricing and support.
