Different people have different browser preferences and each can do all the functions outlined below. However, the terms and actions used below are Internet Explorer specific.
- Favourites bar – add frequently used websites to your favourites bar to have them always visible and easily accessible.
- Pop up blocker – blocks nuisance advertisements, but can also block items you’d like to see. Turn it on or off under the Privacy tab under Internet Options.
- Add-ons – examples of add-ons are Adobe Flash Player and QuickTime. These add-ons, also called plug-ins, enable your browser to perform extra functions such as playing video.
- In-Private Browsing – prevents Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. Useful for doing confidential work on a common computer.
- Compatibility View (broken page picture next to address bar) – if you are on a website and the format seems a bit odd, the chances are that the website is older and not considered compatible with your browser. Click this button to rectify.
- Send Page as Email – follow these steps: 1) File, 2) Send, 3) Page by Email. This is a great way to send when you are on a page that will time out and therefore sending a link wouldn’t work.
- Caret Browsing – pressing F7 turns it on. This puts a moveable cursor onto the webpage you are on so you can select text using the keyboard rather than mouse.
- SmartScreen Filter – when turned on, this feature will advise you if you are visiting a website that has been reported as unsafe for reasons such as phishing and malware.
