I cry a little when I see a @xtra.co.nz email address being used personally. In writing this blog, I started to think am I being a little sensitive about the topic, is it just me? So I decided to Google “problems with xtra email” which resulted in 539,000 results – which really just confirmed what I thought.
Reason 1) Using an ISP’s provided email address, like @xtra.co.nz means that you are stuck between a rock and a hard place if you ever want to move Internet Service Provider’s. You either have to pay them for the privilege of keeping that address each month, or frantically try and tell everyone you are moving.
Reason 2) The bigger issue, is that of security, a number of ISP’s have found it hard to keep up with the latest practices like proactive notification, and multi-factor authentication. There is also the side issue of the confusion caused by email not syncing between devices – reducing productivity and leaving room for error.
Reason 3) There is a better way – move to a free email account provider. We would suggest Gmail for pure personal use with one of its benefits being the free two factor authentication security feature.
If you are looking for an email account provider for more professional use then we would recommend Office365 over Gmail, due to the easy of integration with iDevices (iPhone / iPad), full calendaring and contact support that can easily sync with Microsoft Outlook.
